Gas Lamp Grille

Overview

When you’re looking for a great spot to dine in Newport, Gas Lamp Grille at 206 Thames St offers the perfect blend of excellent food, a relaxed atmosphere, and local charm. Situated right in the heart of one of the most picturesque areas in Rhode Island, this cozy restaurant is a favorite for both locals and tourists. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty meal, a quick bite, or an evening out with friends, Gas Lamp Grille checks all the boxes.

As soon as you step into the Gas Lamp Grille, you’re welcomed by the warm, inviting ambiance that sets the tone for a wonderful dining experience. The rustic yet refined decor combines exposed brick walls with vintage gas lamps, giving the restaurant a unique, comfortable feel. The open bar area, with its craft beer selection and signature cocktails, provides a laid-back vibe perfect for starting your meal. Whether you're seated at a booth or at one of their intimate tables, you’ll feel like you’re part of a Newport tradition.

One of the standout features of Gas Lamp Grille is its diverse menu. From fresh seafood to classic American comfort food, there's something for everyone. On a recent visit, I opted for their seafood chowder, which was rich and creamy with just the right amount of seasoning. For the main course, I went with the grilled fish tacos, a flavorful choice that paired perfectly with the tangy slaw and zesty lime. Each bite was a testament to the kitchen’s dedication to fresh, high-quality ingredients. Of course, no meal would be complete without dessert, and their chocolate lava cake hit the spot-decadent, warm, and the perfect end to a satisfying meal.

What makes Gas Lamp Grille even more special is its commitment to offering seasonal dishes that highlight the best of Rhode Island’s local produce. For example, during my visit, they had a special featuring locally sourced clams, which were prepared in a savory garlic broth-an unforgettable experience. The menu changes regularly, offering new and exciting options while still keeping the crowd-pleasers that have made Gas Lamp Grille a Newport staple.

Beyond the food, the service is something that deserves mention. The staff at Gas Lamp Grille are friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. From the moment we were greeted at the door to the final sip of wine, the team made sure everything was perfect. They’re always ready with recommendations, which is helpful if you're not sure what to try. The atmosphere is relaxed, making it easy to enjoy your meal without feeling rushed.

If you're in Newport and looking for a place with great food and a cozy atmosphere, Gas Lamp Grille is the place to go. It’s an ideal spot for a casual dinner with friends or a special occasion. The combination of delicious food, friendly service, and the charming location makes it one of the best places to dine in the area. Plus, being so close to the waterfront, it’s easy to take a stroll after your meal and enjoy the sights of the harbor.

It’s no surprise that this restaurant has earned its place among Newport’s top dining destinations. The combination of an impressive menu, quality ingredients, and a welcoming environment makes it clear why so many people return time and time again. Whether you’re craving seafood, a juicy steak, or just a great cocktail, Gas Lamp Grille has something to satisfy every palate.

We loved the Gas Lamp!! We ate here two nights in a row, and the food was excellent. Cade was fantastic, and made us feel so welcome. The whole staff was great. We will definitely come back on future trips to Newport!

Highly recommend this place! We had the lobster roll and the cod β€” both dishes were absolutely delicious. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, and we felt genuinely welcome. A 10/10 experience.

On an east coast trip and decided to make the drive to Newport. Absolutely worth it. We came down and enjoyed a stroll around downtown. Very cute place. Parking was plentiful, but you needed to pay for it . We walked by the Gas Lamp Grille and it was intriguing. The menu was diverse., so we decided to eat dinner here. The service was solid. It wasn't too busy. The food came out hot and was very delicious. The presentation was good. Most importantly, the food was very good.the view from the restaurant was very good as well. This is a great spot for a quick bite to eat. I would definitely recommend it.

Great food here! Got dinner here on our last night on vacation. We got mudslides they were amazing! I also got Lobster Mac and cheese again since it’s not common from where I live. They have gluten free pasta penne! They were a bit busy but they had the sliding doors open so a lot of fresh air was coming through.

What an amazing experience! This place is friendly and a bit loud. The service was TOP notch. I felt like family as soon as I walked in. The pizza, .... IT'S INCREDIBLE. THE lobster roll is decadent and warm and plain delicious. The wings were AMAZING! The cod with asparagus melted in my mouth . The fried seafood platter was not over-battered and heavy but light and fresh... I tried the Mango wheat tap from the rotating line and it made my pallet do something it's never done.... I highly recommend but beware it's loud and young and free-spirited... The Mango wheat (tasted like a mango Blue Moon) Whalers Rose beer tasted surprisingly light for an ale!!

Our lunch entrees were very good but the service was extremely slow and the restaurant wasn't very busy when we visited. The food quality is good enough for us to go back.
